QUINCE @ Lincoln Center

QUINCE en la Plaza was an evening-long outdoor celebration that took place as part of Lincoln Center's Summer for the City in 2022. Co-created by Camilo Quiroz-Vázquez and Ellpetha Tsivicos, founder’s of One Whale’s Tale, in collaboration with The Bushwick Starr, this event transformed Hearst Plaza into an immersive Quinceañera, celebrating the Latin American cultural touchstone, and featuring live music, dance performances, food, mesmerizing art, and a silent disco with DJ Mickey Pérez at the city’s largest outdoor dance floor, The Oasis.

Dia de los Muertos on the Gowanus Canal
An outdoor event hosted by the Gowanus Dredger’s Boathouse featuring a community altar, characters from Quince, and new characters from Mexican folklore, floating down the Gowanus, and performing ancestral rituals.
The audience was invited to bring a photo or memory of a lost loved one to add to the altar to offer a sense of community catharsis, healing, and dialogue during a year of incredible loss, trauma, and solitude. There was a Tecuanes dance group, a taco truck, tamales, mezcal, live music, a community altar, visual art, and the spirits of all of our ancestors, on a full moon in October 2020.
We worked with the Tecuanes de San Juan Bautista dance group, Make the Road, Street Vendor Project, Made by Ellie, and the Gowanus Dredger’s Boathouse to build this experience.
